+ nu garcon + vanity fairy + all cats are beautiful + speedboat

0800-MOSHI-MOSHI is a digital-only Moshi Moshi Records imprint for showcasing fresh talent. Initially set up as a means to share work by musicians made during lockdown the format proved to be an excellent way to get music out quickly, without many of the limitations imposed by a more traditional label set-up. It reminded us of the heady days of the Moshi Moshi Singles Club and so, in the same spirit, we decided to make it a vehicle for developing artists.

0800-MOSHI-MOSHI single releases lead to a set of EPs – Speedboat, Vanity Fairy, Nu Garcon and all cats are beautiful all released their debuts this year – and after playing a triumphant showcase gig at the Waiting Room in London earlier this autumn the bands are ready to bring their music to live audiences around the UK. The first 0800-MOSHI-MOSHI tour starts in January next year!

Speedboat

After spending all their musical lives apart, siblings Johnny and Will Griffiths finally started writing together at home in 2017. Initially rejecting, and then taking inspiration from their Dad’s collection of 80’s pop, indie and new wave the brothers settled on the name Speedboat as something which encapsulated their widescreen new wave inspired synth pop. Working from their flat the pair would swap duties on vocals, guitars, synths and keys and with the writing and recording blurred into one process they produced something surprisingly expansive and cinematic.

Their debut EP, Split The Bill, bursts with energy and the exuberance of a group who’ve stumbled upon their winning formula for the very first time. It possesses a rawness to it driven by home recording; yet it retains the gloss and glamour of Speedboat’s panoramic pop vision. It’s a collection of songs that brims with excitement, showcasing as it does two brothers who, now that they’ve found each other creatively, look set for many more sonic voyages to come.

Vanity Fairy

Vanity Fairy is the creation of songwriter and vocalist Daisy Capri, a vehicle within which she can escape to a world where disco remains Queen.

“My musical tastes skew very much in favour of the 70s and 80s because I love the aesthetic of those eras” she says. “The colours, the music, the clothes. In many ways I wish I'd lived through those years. I feel like I would have fitted in better then; I enjoy imagining an alternate life where I live in those decades.”

Her Love From Above EP lives in a space of pulsating four-on-the-floor rhythms, probing Moroder synths and ascendant sugar-sweet strings. It’s a place where Capri can be the fictitious Vanity and utilise her shimmering vocal falsetto - previously compared to everyone from Kate Bush to Barry Gibb - to set out on a path towards international pop superstardom.

Nu Garcon

Band members Tony Onuchukwu and Bruno Burton met in school in Canterbury and have circled each other since, admiring each other’s work even as life circumstances took them to Prague and London respectively.

They finally reunited as Nu Garcon and produced their debut ‘Only One You’ EP – a slinky, bright but not over-polished set of tracks that routinely pivots between the nostalgia-as-hypnagogic pop production of someone like Oneohtrix Point Never, the lo-fi crackle and hiss of DIY cult character R Stevie Moore and Madlib’s honed-in beat making. Never, though, does it allow its deftly delivered melodic hooks to sink back into the haze; Nu Garcon are an experimental pop act with the emphasis on pop.

Nu Garcon is a relatively new project but it arrives sounding already fully realised. It’s a story of a personal collaboration years in the making, a dovetailing of two people’s desire to change their direction in life, and the timing to allow them to do just that.

all cats are beautiful

all cats are beautiful’s Kyle (they/them) and Elena (she/they) describe themselves as “two queer best friends making dance music but for sad people” but that only really scratches the surface of the East London duo’s candlelight post-pop.

First meeting when they both worked at an independent cinema, the pair quickly built a friendship, Elena initially providing input on Kyle’s music before becoming a co-conspirator in her own right. The duo take inspiration from several places - an intricately guitar-led cover of Arthur Russell’s Lucky Cloud earlier this year is one signpost to the their sound, while if you listen carefully to their debut the things we made EP you might find tributes to Owen Pallett and Frank Ocean – but they’re careful not to weigh themselves with too much outside interference. They don’t need to; the pair have a way of combining multiple small motifs, loops and ideas to paradoxically create a sense of simplicity that’s all of their own.

The duo create songs that revel in hushed intimacy, strip away the complexities of relationships to look at the core emotions underneath them, and provide solace in times of isolation. For Kyle and Elena though, all cats are beautiful is above all else a vessel for their friendship and a celebration of the creativity that stems from it.

Voodoo Daddys Showroom is not wheelchair accessible.
