Norwich Puppet Theatre, has over the last 28 years gained an international reputation for innovation and artistic excellence. It provides a year-round home for children’s entertainment.

The Theatre is located in the purpose converted Grade I listed St James’ Church on the edge of the city centre, a short walk from the Cathedral, and it is one of only two building based puppet theatres in the country.

The Theatre was founded in 1980 by Ray Da Silva whose dream of creating a theatre dedicated to puppetry and its allied arts was realised here in Norwich. Now in its 28th year the Theatre has survived the recent Arts Council cut in funding and continues to present pioneering children’s puppetry from national and international visiting companies. Although funding is secure for the current financial year, ongoing support is being sought for 2009 and beyond.

To complement the performances, the Theatre offers an extensive programme of children’s puppet making workshops, exploring the wide range of puppet types – from shadow to glove, and rod to marionette – through the craft route. Adults are not forgotten with at least one workshop a season to give them a chance to show off their creativity at an evening or all-day puppet making workshop – all abilities are welcome.

In addition to the daytime family performances, evening entertainment - including puppetry - is also increasingly provided at Norwich Puppet Theatre. The Theatre has become a second home to Norwich Young People’s Theatre, Laughing Monkey, Black Ram and Theatre101 and regularly hosts their ambitious and exciting productions.

The venue’s 180 seat raked auditorium and intimate 50 seat Octagon Studio are also available for hire. In recent times Norwich Puppet Theatre has been used for book signings, poetry readings, acoustic concerts, and other diverse events including Post Office closure debates and a Dr Who day. All events can be serviced by a licensed bar!

There are a variety of workshops available at the Puppet Theatre covering all styles and ages – from pre-school children, through families to adults. For further information please contact the Puppet Theatre on 01603 629921.
